Ballistic-Missile Submarines

Creation of nuclear strategic underwater cruisers is one of the main direction of CDB ME Rubin’s activities. The largest in the World’s history program of nuclear submarine construction - creation of about 100 strategic underwater cruisers - was implemented by means of a wide co-operation of home enterprises under the ideological and scientific leadership of scientists and designers of the enterprise within the period from 1956 and up to now.

Sequential missile submarine modifications were due, mainly, to the creation of new missile complexes that ensured steady improvement of their main tactical characteristics such as missile range, combat arming, specified firing accuracy, availability of means to countermeasure the antimissile defence, their complete set etc.

The first generation of nuclear underwater missile-carriers - "Hotel" (Project 658) - was built to the enterprise design in 1960-1964.

Within the frames of the second generation nuclear missile-carriers Yankee (Project 667A), Delta I (Project 667B), Delta II (Project 667BD), Delta III (Project 667BDR), Delta IV (Project 667BDRM) have been designed.

Using the previous experience the enterprise in conjunction with necessary industrial organisations solved the most complicated task - creation of the seagoing strategic system "Typhoon" based on heavy nuclear underwater cruiser of the third generation of project 941 (Typhoon) with solid-propellant multiple warhead missiles.

Location of a large number of large-size missiles, limitations of the missile-carrier length and her draft specified by operating conditions resulted in the necessity of creation of a submarine of unusual design and with large reserve buoyancy. Such architecture allowed simultaneously reaching unique reliability, survivability, maneuverability and habitability characteristics.

Combat service conditions and habitability have been considerably improved due to introduction of the remote automated control of the ship and its systems as well as due to increase of living and service areas per one crew member.

During the construction of these ships CDB ME "Rubin" and PO "Sevmash" (Severodvinsk) initiated the introduction of such technological innovations as an aggregate and module construction method, creation of assembly units of various levels etc. Subsequently these innovations were widely adopted in the shipbuilding.

For more than 40 years of construction of nuclear missile submarines of the three generations a considerable progress has been made in their technical level and efficiency.

At present, a series of nuclear underwater strategic cruisers designed at CDB ME "Rubin" is built at PO "Sevmash". On April 15, 2007, the lead ship of the series Yuri Dolgorukiy has been launched. Submarines of this project will become the base of seagoing strategic nuclear forces of Russia in the 21st century.
